Meeting Minutes 10/07/2009

INTRODUCTIONS

Advisors
*Dr. Resta – a co-advisor, along with Dr. Grutzmacher. His role is to support us, but we are essentially running things. Outside of meetings, feel free to talk to any of the advisors and officers. This is Dr. Grutzmacher’s first year at the Kent campus, although she taught at Stark for 26 years and has gained a lot of experience and built a good program there. He acknowledged Megan’s work last year, because if it wasn’t for her, we would not have a chapter this year!

Executive Board
*John Pasternak, President, senior ++, music education major, saxophone
*Christian Shoemaker, Vice-President, sophomore/junior, music education, saxophone
*Mallory Sajewski, Secretary, sophomore, music performance, oboe
*Cara McGuinness, Treasurer, sophomore, music education, flute
*Eric Johnston, Parliamentarian, sophomore, music education, trombone

Members Present
*Abby Mariano
*Amy Wooley
*Clark Rice,
*Emily Lenart
*Jeneva Ford
*Jessica Keider
*Jessica Stover
*Lindsay Ibos
*Megan Arnica

In the past, five people have sat up front and told the group what’s going to happen. We want everyone to have a say, so be open during these meetings!

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Everyone’s interested, yay! J

Garfield High School Practice Club – Wednesdays 3:30-4:30. Volunteers to just walk around and help people. Conflicts with both marching band and orchestra, so Mallory and Clark are the only ones who may be able to do it. Let Dr. Resta know for sure if you’re able to and he’ll give you contact information.

Caroling at nursing homes – yes all around! J

Instrument demonstrations/petting zoos at elementary schools.

Solo & Ensemble District VI adjudicator assistants. Megan will email to get more information.

If you have any more ideas, email any of us and we’ll put it on the agenda for the next meeting!

CONVENTION

Convention will be January 28-30 in Cincinnati.

Dr. Grutzmacher suggested that we set up a meeting with Dr. Seachrist to see if we can get money for convention. In the past we have gotten up to $700 by “earning” our money working the Kent State booth.

We need to know by our last meeting of the semester (December 9th) if you are going with us, in order for us to help you pay. For those of you student teaching, you’ll be okay and we’ll work something out for you.

If you have friends in Cincinnati, you might be able to stay with them and save some money.

If you have any questions about convention, ask anybody who has gone before: John, Mallory, etc.

RECRUITING

Deadline to register for OCMEA = OCTOBER 31st

There are 104 music education majors. If 100 join OCMEA, we will get a free party in Dr. Ayling’s basement.

Dr. Resta suggested that each of us pledge to recruit 3 new people by next week.

We can register online again! Yay! J

We’ll hang up thermometers and try to fill up the whole thing by October 31st. Dr. Grutzmacher can call and have a list of people who have actually signed up sent to us, so that on a weekly basis or so we can fill the thermometer.

FUNDRAISING

Megan – In past years, OCMEA has made ornaments to sell at Chorale’s Feaste. Last year was not successful so we have a lot of leftovers – we’d just need to paint over and change the year. It’s been very successful in the past, so Megan will talk to people and see what was different this past year.

Abby – 50/50 raffle at the marching band concert.

Amy – Silent auction. Mini hot chocolate/bake sale.

Dr. Resta – A funny youtube video. Somebody took a video of his kid who was loopy from the dentist, and made $25,000 by running ads during the video. Email John with ideas.

We need to register OCMEA as a student organization and fill out the allocations form.

Clark Rice and Jessica Stover were not at the open house, so add their emails to the mailing list.

SHIRTS

Everybody wants shirts! J

Navy blue with gold writing

Front: “Kent State”, silhouette of a squirrel playing an instrument, “Music Education”

Back: “OCMEA Chapter 94”

The squirrels will be set up in Pregame Alley before the Homecoming game. Vote! They’ll announce the winner at the game. Please thank Dr. Lee – he designed and built the stage to scale.

SPEAKERS

November 18th – Mr. Curfman – Traditions and coming into a new district.

December 9th – Music therapist – Dr. Grutzmacher knows someone who got her degree in oboe performance at Kent State and is now a music therapist in the Cleveland area. She offered to come in any time this year to do a (free) presentation about music therapy.

Dr. Woody Anderson – Well-known author in MENC who lives in Aurora. He wrote “Integrating Music into the Classroom.”

Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser – Big fees though!

OMEA historian – History of music education.

Look for posters and reminder emails!

COMMITTEES

Constitution Committee – Needed to revise the constitution. And by that, we mean start over J. Eric will head up the committee. Members of the committee will be Amy, Abby, and Emily. There’s only one copy of the constitution, but Eric will make copies.

Recruitment/Activities Committee – Will be focusing on recruiting and making the thermometer posters and such initially (at least until October 31st). Cara will head up the committee. Members of the committee will be Lindsay, Jessica K, and Jessica S.

Committee heads must give a report at the next meeting.

OTHER

The President’s Binder is staying in Dr. Grutzmacher’s office so that everyone has access to it.

The Exec Board will meet October 30th.
