Meeting Minutes 12/9/2009

Meeting called to order at 7:02 PM.

CONVENTION

Rooms. The student activities budget has not been used for several years, so we have enough to reserve 5 rooms for convention. We need two people for each room to be “room captains” and use their names and addresses for when Dr. Grutzmacher makes the reservations, but we can comfortably fit 4 people to a room. Bring sleeping bags if you want!

People Going. In addition to the people here, we also have Tommy Lewis and Robert Morton. People not here tonight were told to email Dr. Grutzmacher.

Traveling. You are expected to drive yourself or carpool. A signup sheet for people carpooling was passed around. In addition to the people here, Rob Morton has a big car.

Parking. Expect to pay $20 a day, maybe more. Make sure your parking deck doesn’t close on the weekends so that you’ll be able to get your car! When looking for parking, consider safety walking back at night in downtown Cincinnati.

Registration. If it’s not postmarked by January 8th, it will cost you $35 (an extra $5). You will need your membership ID number. The concert on the first night is the Canadian Brass, so make sure that you indicate when registering that you would like to go.

Service. Because the School of Music is paying for our rooms, we will be required to volunteer at the booth and serve as an usher for the KSU Chorale concert.

Food. It’s best (and cheapest!) to just pack your own.

Cost. You should be able to attend conference Thursday through Saturday for less than $100.

Presentations. There is a full, 30 page long schedule of events on the convention website. Kim Smith picked out the presentations that she thought would be of most interest to college students. Plan ahead of time all that you would like to do so that you don’t miss it!

Observation Hours. Dr. Grutzmacher will give the students in her methods class some observation hours for attending convention.

Dr. Grutzmacher has a handout with all of these details and more!

NURSING HOME

John had one in mind, but was unable to get in touch with the person in charge. Dr. Resta has two other options. John was hoping to get a group together to go play or sing musicals – he has books and as long as we have four people we can make something work! This will be sometime next week. There will be a sign up sheet for people interested in going once we have an official day and time.

SPRING 2010 MEETINGS

January 21st at 12:00, recital hall
February 10th at 7:00, guest speaker: music therapist
April 7th at 7:00, guest speakers: Mr. Hoefler (Nordonia High School) and Mr. Monroe (Stow-Munroe Falls High School)

FUTURE GUEST SPEAKERS

We’d like to get a general music or choral teacher. Email Dr. Grutzmacher if you have any recommendations. Dr. Devore’s wife (choral), the teacher at Stanton Middle School (general), and Mrs. Lenzo (general) were suggested.

HIGH SCHOOL HELP

Dr. Resta has heard from three schools looking for “helpers” – Bedford, Garfield, and Twinsburg. Some are string programs and some are band programs. This will be very informal and flexible because there is no specific day or time you would be required to be there. Let John know if you are interested in helping, and then Dr. Resta will get you in touch with the band director at your chosen school. You could help teach, give lessons, run sectionals, etc. Dr. Grutzmacher pointed out that Garfield would be a good one to visit because it is inter-city and we don’t have that experience in Kent.

CONSTITUTION COMMITTEE

They will be meeting Tuesday at 7:00 at the lounge. There should be an electronic copy of the current constitution available on the website. Look over it, and come to the meeting with ideas for revisions!

ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE

Details to come next semester!

SOLO AND ENSEMBLE

This will be an almost all day experience on February 13th at Crestwood High School. We would set up a table to talk to people about Kent State and recruit, and we would also serve as “judges’ assistants.” You’ll get to watch the judges and talk to them about what they think, what they noticed, etc. This will help fine-tune your analyzing ears, which is very important for music education majors especially. This will also help you meet new people in the music educating business – the judges started off as teachers too! Dr. Grutzmacher will also give her methods class observation hours for attending. Christian has done this before, so talk to him if you have any questions about the experience!

Adjourned for guest speakers at 7:27 PM.
